Getting Here and Transport Links
Birch House Cottage is incredibly easy to find, just follow postcode LA12 8QJ on your sat nav. Unlike many semi-rural locations, the postcode brings you directly to the cottage.
For those using the "what3words" application, the location is "clean.baker.fewest"
Most guests will arrive by car for convenience, and the best way to get to the cottage (whether arriving from north or south) will be to leave the M6 motorway at junction 36.
Pick up the A591 heading towards Windermere for around 4 miles then take the exit to A590 signposted towards Ulverston and Newby Bridge.
Continue on the A590 for around 10 miles, following signs for Ulverston and you will cross a roundabout at the small village of Newby Bridge.
Just one mile further on you will see a sign that tells you you are in Backbarrow, and see signs for the Motor Museum on the right hand side of the road. You should take the next left turn (signposted Brow Edge and Bigland Hall).
The cottage is just 200 yards down this road on the right hand side of the street with the house sign "1 Birch House."
Parking is on the street, and is unreserved. Key collection and check in instructions will be provided in our welcome email 7 days before your holiday starts.
The cottage is on the main bus route between Windermere and Ulverston (nearest bus stop is by the underpass around 200 yards from the cottage). Windermere and Ulverston are both served by train services, so it is possible to arrive by train and bus, but for practicality we really do recommend a car to travel to Birch House.
Once you are at the cottage it is possible to leave the car and explore on foot if you like walking, or using the bus as mentioned above (buses are just £2 from now until the end of 2024 so they are a cost effective way of exploring the Lake District during your stay if you don't want to drive), or take a ride on the wonderful Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway (less than 1 mile away) or enjoy the fantastic views on the Windermere Lake Cruisies (2 miles away, boats sail to Bowness and to Ambleside).
